Coercivity and exchange bias of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic multilayers

چکیده
For a model system consisting of a ferromagnetic layer exchange coupled to an antiferromagnetic layer with a compensated interface, detailed mean-field-type calculations are performed. Both the coercive field and the exchange bias field are calculated. For the coercive field, a rather broad enhancement around the Néel temperature TN of the antiferromagnetic layer is found irrespective of whether the antiferromagnetic layer is structurally disordered or not, while exchange bias is only found for disordered systems. We show that the observed enhancement of the coercivity around TN also found experimentally and the occurrence of exchange bias are of different origin.

Coercivity enhancement above the Néel temperature of an antiferromagnetÕ ferromagnet bilayer
Single-crystal thin films of the antiferromagnet FeF2 have been used to exchange bias overlayers of Fe. An unexpected coercivity enhancement is observed at temperatures above the Néel temperature of the FeF2. This coercivity reaches a peak value of over 600 Oe close to the Néel temperature and persists to above 300 K. The coercivity is correlated with the growth of an anisotropy in the ferromag...

Electric-field modulating exchange bias and near 180 deterministic magnetization switching at room temperature are demonstrated in simple antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic/ferroelectric (AFM/FM/FE) exchange-coupled multiferroic multilayers of IrMn/Co/PZT. A rather large exchange bias field shift up to 1Hex/Hex = 500% was obtained. This change governs mainly the electric-field strength rather than...

A numerical investigation of exchange coupled ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic multilayers with a twinned crystal structure for the antiferromagnet is presented. Motivated by recent experimental findings we focus on the influence of the directions of the magnetic field during the initial cooling procedure and during the hysteresis. Upon variation of these directions the ferromagnet displays diff...
متن کاملRole of interface coupling inhomogeneity in domain evolution in exchange bias
Models of exchange-bias in thin films have been able to describe various aspects of this technologically relevant effect. Through appropriate choices of free parameters the modelled hysteresis loops adequately match experiment, and typical domain structures can be simulated. However, the use of these parameters, notably the coupling strength between the systems' ferromagnetic (F) and antiferrom...

The study of exchange bias in nanostructures is interesting from both fundamental and technological points of view. From a fundamental point of view, the reduction of the lateral dimensions in ferromagnetic (FM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) systems can cause significant alterations of the domain structure of the layers, hence leading to substantial changes in the magnitudes of the exchange bias fiel...
